Installing a Hero Medallion using 3M™ VHB™ Pressure-activated Tape

The VHB tape circle that you purchased for your medallion is a double-sided acrylic-foam tape that must be pressed firmly to “activate” the adhesive. When you peel the liner, it may feel only lightly tacky—this is normal. Without proper pressure during installation, the bond may never reach full strength.

For porous materials like stone (e.g., granite) or concrete that can absorb or transmit water, the mounting surface must be cleaned and, if needed, sealed with an appropriate sealant before installation. Moisture at the surface can interfere with adhesion.

1) Clean both surfaces

• Clean the monument surface where the medallion will mount using isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and water (use a 50–70% alcohol mix).
• Dry completely.
• Clean the back of the medallion as well (skin oils from handling can reduce adhesion).

2) Understand activation pressure

VHB tape typically requires about 15 lbs of pressure per square inch to properly activate. For common medallion sizes, that translates to:

Time & temperature: The bond builds over time—about 20 minutes to reach ~50% strength and up to 72 hours for full strength at room temperature. Install at 60°F (16°C) or warmer for best results.

3) Apply tape to the medallion

• Once both surfaces are dry, remove the backing from the adhesive side of the tape circle.
• Center the tape circle on the back of the medallion and press firmly to seat it.
• Remove the remaining liner so the tape is ready to mount.

4) Mount and clamp

• Position the medallion on the prepared surface and press firmly to set it in place.
• Apply the appropriate pressure (per the table) using wood clamps or metal clamps with protective pads to avoid damaging the medallion.
• Leave clamps on for at least 1 hour. Longer clamp time (roughly 24–72 hours) increases bond strength.

5) Seal the edges (recommended)

After removing the clamps, seal the perimeter between the medallion and the monument surface with an outdoor, UV-resistant waterproof sealant (for example, silicone) to reduce water intrusion.
